LOS ANGELES — Doctors are hailing the birth of a baby in Los Angeles a “medical miracle.”

According to the Daily Mail, Baby Silas Philips was born three months prematurely by Caesarean section at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in California. During the surgery, doctors were shocked to see that he was still inside the amniotic sac. They snapped a few quick photos of the rare birth before removing the baby from the sac.

The amniotic sac is a bag of fluid where an unborn baby develops and grows. Usually the sac breaks when a woman goes into labor, hence the term “water breaking.”

Being born “en caul” is the term used when the child is born within an intact amniotic sac. It is also known as a “veiled birth.” Doctors say being born with the amniotic sac intact is “extremely rare,” occurring in roughly one in 80,000 births.

The Daily Mail reports that while Silas was born at 26 weeks, doctors hope he will go home next month.
