CHICAGO — Voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum supporting an elected school board Tuesday.

The non-binding referendum appeared on the ballot in 37 wards across the city and was approved by the majority of voters in all of those wards.

That gives lawmakers an idea of voter support of the issue but a change to the state law would be required to switch from an appointed board to an elected one.
