Dangerous, record-breaking cold hits Chicago area

CHICAGO -- The bitter and dangerous cold continues to lock the Chicago area in its grip.

The high temperature on Thursday afternoon is expected to get no higher than 4 above. A wind chill advisory is in effect for several counties including Cook, De Kalb, DuPage, Kane and Will. Wind chills are expected to be 20 to 30 degrees below zero.

Many schools, including CPS, cancelled classes Thursday. CPS said in a statement, “While classes are cancelled, CPS buildings will remain open and accept students who still arrive at schools.  CPS teachers and educational support personnel are not expected at schools tomorrow, but CPS administrative staff, building engineers and custodians will report to work.”

13 YMCAs across Chicagoland will be open and available for student drop- offs-- for a fee. As will Chicago public libraries and park district facilities. Both the Adler Planetarium and the Museum of Science and Industry are offering free entry for children accompanied by an adult.
