Frozen hydrants cause problems during South Side fire
CHICAGO — The cold weather created some problems for Chicago firefighters overnight on the South Side.
At least three fire hydrants were frozen as they tried to get water on an apartment fire on near 79th and South Drexel Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood.
The fire quickly escalated to a two-alarm fire as firefighters struggled to find water to put it out.
They were able to reach a working hydrant several blocks away.
Workers with the city’s Water Department were also called in to help thaw the fire hydrants.
The fire was eventually put out.
The building was abandoned.
No one was injured.
