Mother, boyfriend charged after 2-day-old dies from drug intoxication

GREENVILLE, SC – Authorities in South Carolina have charged a man and a woman in the November 2014 death of a 2-day-old.

Fox Carolina reports tests showed the baby had “high levels of methamphetamine in her system” and the cause of death was drug intoxication.

The baby’s death was ruled a homicide.

The baby’s mother, Kelli Noelle Smith-Durham, also tested positive for the drug. She was charged with murder by child abuse and four counts of unlawful conduct toward a child.

Fox Carolina reports Smith-Durham’s boyfriend, who was also charged. and three young children were all living in the house. Authorities describe the house as “deplorable,” with no power and heated by propane canister heaters.

Bond has been set at $40,000.
