SPRINGFIELD -- Governor Bruce Rauner has awarded 18 new state licenses for medical marijuana growers, and another 52 licenses for marijuana dispensaries.

Eight more licenses remain to be awarded, though it will still be several months before patients can legally take the drug.

Former Governer Pat Quinn reviewed dozens of applications but he left office without granting any licenses.

By one estimate, Illinois' legal pot market could be worth $36 million in 2016.
