WAUSAU, Wis. -- For the past 40 years, a slim-looking spruce tree has been a fixture in Neil Olson's living room in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Neil put the tree up in 1974, when two of his six sons went off to serve in the Vietnam War.

He planned to take it down when all six of his boys were home again for Christmas at the same time.

Five of them have been able to come home, but he's still waiting for his sixth son, who is disabled, to make that journey home.

Until then, the tree remains up. And the most amazing part? After all these years, so many of the needles remain.

Neil spoke with WGN Morning News over the phone on Tuesday.
