GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. --  An elderly man from Grand Rapids, Mich., has finally met his son after discovering a letter he believes was hidden by his since-departed wife for decades.

According to FOX17 in West Michigan, Tony Trapani, 81, always wanted a child, and tried all his life to have one. But he thought it was something he'd never achieved.

That's until Trapani found a letter that was sent by the child’s mother back in 1959 that told him of his then 5-year-old son. That son is now 61.

Trapani told FOX17 his wife at the time must have intercepted the letter and hid it from him for decades. He said he found the letter when he was cleaning up his deceased wife's file cabinets.

"I have a little boy,” the letter reportedly reads. “He is five years old now. What I’m trying to say Tony is he is your son. He was born November 13th, 1953.”

Meanwhile, the now-61-year-old son, Samuel Childress, said he always suspected his father got the letter, but thought the man didn’t want anything to do with him.

Father and son met for the first time Sunday.

So you’re saying it’s not her fault? Don’t be so delusional. She knew exactly what she was doing and had decades to make it right. She was selfish and cold hearted.

Before condemning the wife, one might consider the possibility that the wife actually didn’t know about the letter. We just have the husband’s claim that she his it. It is unlikely that a wife would be able to know her husband may have had a child out of wedlock with another woman and never let it slip for decades. The husband would have more reason to keep a letter like that hidden. It conveniently came to light only after the wife is dead and unable to refute what he claims. I’m a bit skeptical about the whole thing.

We could never prove with any certainty who hid the letter. However, the video does say that he & his wife always wanted kids and could never conceive. Wrong as it definitely is, it’s not hard to imagine her hiding that from him. Whether out of jealousy, bitterness, sadness… whatever. Sad story.

I can imagine it was a shock to the wife, but by no means did she have the right to hide the letter and the fact her husband had a son. If she had truly loved and respected him, she would have given him the letter, allowed him to have a relationship with his son. Her actions here selfish. So much time wasted, time the father and son can never get back.
