CHICAGO -- Arson investigators are looking into what caused a massive fire on the far South Side, where nine people were rescued.

The fire broke out in the 9000 block of South Cottage Grove at about 2:30 a.m.

Fire crews arrived to find smoke pouring out of the third floor windows.

They rescued nine people, helping them down ladders.  Three went to Trinity Hospital to get treated for smoke inhalation.

Investigators say circumstances of the fire, which may have started in the back stairwell, are "suspicious".
