The U.S. State Department has issued an alert for U.S. citizens traveling abroad over the holidays.

This alert follows the deadly hostage situation at a cafe in Sydney, Australia that ended with three people dead, including the gunman.

Officials say the gunman was an Islamic extremist.

U.S. citizens traveling abroad should be mindful that terrorist groups focus on hotels, shopping areas and schools.

The travel alert lasts through march.
