Couple sentenced in grape soda killing of 5-year-old
A Tennessee couple was sentenced to 35 years in prison each following the death of the man’s 5-year-old daughter after the couple forced the girl to drink grape soda as punishment.
According to The Kingsport Times News in Kingsport, Tenn., 42-year-old Randall Lee Vaughn and 59-year-old Mary Lavonne Vaughn, of Surgoinsville, Tenn., face the possibility of life in prison without parole for the 2012 murder of 5-year old Alexa Linboom.
Randall Vaughn was the child’s father, while Mary was her stepmother.
The couple had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated child neglect.
The Kingsport Times News reported that a 2012 autopsy showed the couple forced the girl to drink more than 2 liters of soda and water over a one- to two-hour span, reportedly as punishment for her drinking some of her stepmother’s grape soda after being told not to.
