Travel times during Friday’s morning rush hour were extra heavy earlier as IDOT crews worked to clean a sign that had been tagged with graffiti.

The sign, located over the southbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway on the Ogden Ave overpass, informs drivers about merging lanes to the Dan Ryan. Friday morning the sign was obscured by a large spray-painted image.

IDOT says they were alerted to reports of the graffiti around 4 a.m. and a crew began to remove it around 6 a.m.  To do so, two lanes were shut down  and resulted in significant delays for drivers.   Around 7:30, when the crews were finished, travel time from O’Hare to downtown was 2 hours.

IDOT released a statement saying in part, “We understand this did cause an inconvenience and we do apologize for that. For safety reasons, we had to address this issue as quickly as possible. We cannot emphasize enough how dangerous and, as this morning showed, disruptive, this kind of vandalism is. If anyone sees this kind of activity taking place, they are urged to call law enforcement immediately.”
