A $40 bid got a man an antique desk at a Massachusetts auction - and a whole lot more.

When Phil LeClerc got the old desk home, he started looking for a missing door knob.  When he shook the desk, an envelope fell out of a hidden compartment.

It was full of mature U.S. Savings Bonds ranging in value from $50 to $10,000.   More than $127,000 in all.

LeClerc went back to the auction house, where the desk’s previous owner was tracked down.

Turns out, it was sold by a man who was clearing out his 94-year-old father’s house in preparation for moving into a nursing home.

LeClerc returned the bonds just before Thanksgiving.

They’ll come in very handy when the bills from the nursing home arrive.
