A man is hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting outside a River West night club.

The victim, 27, was shot several times just before 3 a.m. Sunday morning in front of the Funky Buddah Lounge in the 700 block of West Grand Avenue.

An off-duty Cook County Sheriff's officer was standing across the street from the bar and saw the man waving a gun in a crowd.  The officer reportedly ordered the man to drop the gun, but he pointed it at the officer.

Police say that officer fired several shots at the man, hitting him multiple times.

Investigators say after the shooting, someone grabbed the man's gun and fled.

Two employees say they heard about seven gunshots as patrons were leaving the bar.

The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The shooting is under investigation.   The officer has not been identified.
