Researchers in Monterey Bay off the coast of California recently captured the first known video of a creature called the black seadevil.

According to Fox News, researchers with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute documented the rare fish almost 2,000 feet below the surface.

Footage of the rather sinister-looking creature was uploaded to the research center’s YouTube channel.

According to Fox News, there is little knowledge of the fish; males live much shorter lifespans than females, and they attach to females as a parasite.

KTTV in Los Angeles notes that despite its appearance, the fish is only about 3.5 inches long.
