A late-night extra-alarm fire killed 32 horses in a stable in northwest suburban Woodstock.

Firefighters were called to the Valley View Acres horse stable at 5116 Mt. Thabor Road in unincorporated Woodstock at 10:53 p.m. Saturday.

A person who runs the stable says they were awakened by  a "crackling sound" coming from the stable.

Firefighters arrived to find the stable in flames.

The stable's owner told officials that there were up to 37 horses inside at the time.  Five horses escaped and were found in a pasture.

Investigators say 32 horses may have died in the fire.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries during the fire and was treated and released from the hospital.

Firefighters faced challenges getting water to the scene because there were no fire hydrants in the area.

Fire departments from 27 different surrounding areas were called to help extinguish the fire.

Losses in the fire, including the horses, are estimated to be more than $1 million.
