A synthetic form of the drug Ecstasy is being blamed for the death of a 21-year-old Spring Grove woman. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies are now trying to figure out where the woman got the drug.

Cristina Villasana was transferred to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan yesterday from a hospital near Spring Groove where she died. The coroner is still awaiting the results of the toxicology report but Lake County Sheriff’s office believes she ingested the drug Monday night.

Authorities are trying to determine who sold the drug to the known as “Sass” - a synthetic form of the drug MDMA or Ecstasy. It is made, according to the sheriff’s office, from the sassafras plant.

The department says bad information was given to hospital staff when they first took her into the hospital near Spring Grove earlier yesterday morning.

Officials say it has done some initial interviews with people who were with the Villasana but the investigation is still in the beginning stages and they are still working to figure out who sold the victim the drug.
