A fire swept through a house of worship in suburban Island Lake.

The two-alarm fire gutted the inside of the Guru Nanak Sikh Mission of America, on State Road.

It was brought under control around midnight. No one was injured.

Founded in 1997, the temple operated a community kitchen and arranged summer religious retreats for local youth.

The mission was cited three years ago for fire safety violations including exposed wiring and locked fire-exit doors.
