Talk radio and the Internet has been buzzing over comments Derrick Rose made at Bulls practice yesterday about being cautious with his health as it could also affect his life after basketball.

Rose said, “I know a lot of people get mad when they see me sit out or whatever, but I think a lot of people don’t understand that … when I sit out it’s not because of this year. I’m thinking about long term…”

He went on to say, “I’m thinking about after I’m done with basketball. Having graduations to go to, having meetings to go to, I don’t want to be in my meetings all sore or be at my son’s graduation all sore just because of something I did in the past. (I’m) just learning and being smart.”

The comments have drawn criticism from fans and members of the media.

Steve Rosenbloom of the Chicago Tribune devoted a whole column to it today saying, “I don’t know if that’s his brother or agent putting that garbage in his head, but it’s one of the most embarrassing things a player can say.”

And others weighed in

Still others defended his comments,

Use to be a Rose sympathizer. Understood his caution about the knees after surgery. Young…too much to lose.
    But now….
This guy makes 19 million playing ball and more than that on endorsements….and he says he’s saving himself for his meetings and kid’s graduations? Well, i know hundreds of guys that do construction and jobs of labor that are 30-40 years old and can’t walk; have arthritis in their hands, knees, backs…and they don’t miss a day of work. They have to put food on the table and have no choice. But you will have a couple of hundred million in the bank by age 40. Why risk having to sit in those uncomfortable folding chairs at your kid’s band recitals while achy? Why risk that uncomfortable feeling of sitting in a meeting in those swivel chairs and having your sciatica act up?

Tell you what, I spend hundreds of dollars to take my kids to a game, only to have you pop shot after shot in practice and then sit on the bench in your street clothes. I think the Bulls should put a ROSE-A-METER on their web site. It can measure your interest in playing that night so fans can decide whether to spend the money on a ticket.

Can you imagine Michael Jordan saving himself for his later years? He was the most competitive and hard working SOB in the sport. When he lost interest, at least he was honest and retired. You should retire for a couple of years…decide what’s best for you and let us know once you decide. Until then… I’ll just wait till game time at home.

I m so sick hearing about Derrick Rose. Two years of a con job by this loser. Derrick Rose and Jay Cutler should be strapped to a raft and set adrift on lake Michigan with a do not rescue order issued.

Maybe you should chill out…moron. You ever been injured????Dillweed maybe you should shut your yap….by this time next month you’ll have your lips firmly on DRoses backend. As far a Jay Cutler he’ll continue getting rich while you cry in your beer😭😭😭😭😭😭😶😶😭😭😭

Hey Bobb until you suffered through two serious knee surgeries you shouldn’t judge. I broke my kneecap and after that I dislocated both knees and since I have a family to feed I kept going now in the winter I’m in pain constantly I keep working but I’m miserable all the time

What a Joke!! What herculean effort did he make? He got paid for sitting on is butt. $95 million – seriously? What a testimony to overpaid, unthinking, athletes. I can’t imagine Soldiers uttering those words as they go into combat. “No Sarge, I’m afraid I may not to grow old if I go into combat”.

  • Apology

After writing the negative segment, I slept on it and want to apologize to Derrick Rose. I understand your apprehension. I came up with some other choices for your career if you choose to retire from basketball. I have a top 5 list as a peace offering.

Number 5 … maybe Jerry can have you play baseball for the Sox. You can shag balls and DH. What? You can get hit by a ball? I didn’t think of that.

Ok, number 4 is better…Volleyball. You can still wear shorts, get fresh air and jump like a deer. What’s that? No shoe endorsements? Let’s move on.

Ok…Number 2 is Bocce Ball…What? See number 5? I’m tying to make good here.
Alright, Derrick. I have it. It’s perfect! You can go to the World Series of Poker! Wear cool Oakley shades (an endorsement!), wear a cool hoodie (another endorsement!) and some ear buds (yet another endorsement!). Your voice would be super cool saying “hit me”. No, Derrick, no one’s actually going to hit you. However, you can get a nasty paper cut when they open those new Bicycle Cards. You can cut your hand pretty bad, so have some Germ-X next to you.
So again, sorry for being so negative before. I hope this helps
