A child was killed and 11 other people, including five children, were injured in an extra-alarm fire at an apartment building on Chicago’s Northwest Side.

The fire broke out around 3 a.m. Sunday on the top floor of a building in the 5700 block of North Kimball Avenue.

Several residents jumped from their windows to escape smoke and flames.

Fire officials say a 10-year old boy was killed. Two people suffered critical injuries and 9 others were stabilized at area hospitals.

The Chicago Tribune reports police are investigating the fire as “suspicious.”

The fire was out by 7 a.m., but firefighters remained on the scene looking for hot spots.
