CTA bag screenings begin today

This is an archived article and the information in the article may be outdated. Please look at the time stamp on the story to see when it was last updated.

If you’re taking the “L”, you may get stopped to have your bag checked.

Starting today, mobile screening teams will be set up at random CTA train stations outside the turnstiles.  Police will swab bags for explosives.

If passengers refuse to be screened, they won’t get through the turnstile.

Los Angeles, Boston, Washington D.C. and New Jersey have similar security measures in place.

sounds like another headache for all the people *not* breaking any laws -or- was some threat made they aren’t deigning to tell us about?

  • Shannon

This is STUPID – they are just slowing down travel times even more. There has never been an explosive on a CTA train… this is Rahm just wanting control. This would make me feel really violated… like.. here’s may laptop, my tampons, and my lipstick. Want to be a little more invasive CTA?? They can all GTH.

  • Abe

It really males no sense. All theater so they can say they did something when whatever the hell they think is going to happen, happens.
Random check stations? Like that will stop a two person team where the unarmed person goes first to see if a block is in place.

Jeebus. I’m an idiot and I thought of that.

They only need to get on the train anywhere before their target…

    Dumb, wasteful and misguided.

The CTA cannot handle this! The CTA is not employed by smart enough people. I have already heard of 2 false positives TODAY!!! This is something the CTA should NOT be doing – get the TSA to do it instead! This will not go over in Chicago – too many prejudices in the city!!!

    • Cate

Because the TSA is so brilliant? Seriously, nobody should be doing this. We’ve never had any kind of terrorist attack on the El, I don’t see this doing anything but invading people’s privacy.

  • Frank

What is this going to prevent? You can refuse the search. Unless all stations are monitored, what’s going to stop a motivated bomber from simply refusing a search at one station and going to an unguarded one?

  • A.C.

Totally illegal violation of Forth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America!? Somebody please challenge this abuse in court..!
“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”
