A fire on the south side has left a 89-year-old man dead and his wife in critical condition.

It happened in the 5600 block of S. Mayfield Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

Firefighters believe the blaze started as the man,  Sam Valenti,  was cooking dinner.

They say Valenti's 86-year-old wife was visiting her daughter when she came home and saw that her house was on fire.

She went to a neighbor's house for help and then went inside her home.

Valenti was found unconscious in a stairway in the home and was later pronounced dead.
