An off-duty police sergeant is in the hospital after he was beaten and robbed.

The incident happened at 3 p.m.  Thursday in a parking garage on the 100 block of West Madison St.

Police say between six and 10 people jumped and beat the sergeant .

They stole his service weapon but did not take his badge or wallet.

The attackers fled in a Mercury Mountaineer that lost its bumper on the eighth floor of the parking garage, police said.

The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition and has been in and out of consciousness since the beating.  Although he's expected to survive, the injuries have been described as life-altering.

No arrests have been made,  but detectives say there is surveillance video of the incident.
