The funny thing is, Doug McDermott experienced no nerves Tuesday night.

Admittedly jittery for Monday’s preseason opener, McDermott fared well that night and eagerly looked forward to Tuesday, a game the Bulls eventually lost 111-109 to the Pistons in overtime at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

After all, the only time the reigning NCAA Player of the Year faced back-to-back games in college came during conference tournaments. But seconds after checking in, Tom Thibodeau almost pulled a lung screaming “Doug!” as a defensive assignment got blown.

More mistakes—and missed shots—followed not only for McDermott but for fellow rookie Nikola Mirotic, who had looked so strong in his debut. Mirotic fouled out in just 14 minutes, missing his lone shot and committing four turnovers.

Welcome to the NBA, indeed.
