President Obama is under fire for a salute he gave to a Marine Tuesday.

The White House posted a video of the salute to its Instagram account showing the president exiting Marine one and saluting the Marine with a coffee cup in his right hand.

Critics say the president was disrespectful, and the move was dubbed the “#LatteSalute” on Twitter.

The tradition of presidents saluting military officers dates back to Ronald Reagan in 1981.

A U.S. Navy manual says saluting in general is “the most important of all military courtesies.”

It recommends no salute when a person is carrying objects in their hands.
