Report: Whooping cough cases at New Trier H.S.
Two cases of pertussis, better known as whooping cough, have been reported at New Trier High School in Winnetka.
The bacterial infection has symptoms that seem similar to a common cold, but it can quickly progress to severe coughing and can be very serious in young children.
It’s highly contagious and can be spread through coughing and sneezing.
Pertussis caused a schoolwide panic at New Trier in 2006, when more than 30 cases were reported. This led to the school requiring students to get the vaccine in order to attend.
