i am a black woman with southern roots and culture. my grandfather always said ‘whipping’ was what was done to slaves. sadly, this is another form of internalized oppression, learned behavior from our white masters to strike fear and force us to respect them, and work harder. my uncle was beaten to death in a chicago jail. the officers involved said he had a heart attack and suffered numerous injuries, torn ligaments and bruising when he fell off the cot. no one was held accountable for obviously beating my uncle to death, the message seems to be, its o.k. to beat black men, and boys. whippings are the responsibility and inherited rights of some of our ‘special’ officers.
