A 12-year-old Chicago Public School student is in some big trouble for bringing a handgun to school Monday.

The gun was unloaded and the student told police he brought the gun to the school because he was being bullied by another student.

It all happened at Shmid Elementary on the South Side. Police are still working on where the child got the gun.

It was found in another student's backpack Monday morning. That student then told school officials who moved quickly.

The 12-year-old was arrested at the school Monday afternoon.

Police say the gun was an unloaded .38 caliber special that had 5 shot capacity and a defaced serial number.

The student apparently showed the gun to a few students.

Parents were notified that night of the incident but many are wondering why the school wasn't locked down and why students were dismissed.

WGN talked to one woman who says that the 12-year-old threatened her nephew with the gun by saying he was going to shoot him after school.

Police say they are still investigating, but as of right now, they haven't heard that the 12-year-old made any threats with the gun.

The 12-year-old is being charged with unlawful use of a firearm.
