Body of slain Merrillville officer escorted to medical examiner

The body of a slain Merrillville police officer was taken from Oak Lawn to the Cook County medical examiner's office today via a procession.

24-year-old Nickolaus Schultz died at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after being shot in the head on Saturday.

Schultz was answering a call at a condo complex where residents complained about an evicted tenant trying to move back in.

The man shot Schultz in the head then took his own life.

A fund to help Officer Schultz’s family has been established by the Merrillville Town Council at Centier Bank. Donations can be made to the Benefit Fund account number 102468443.
