Merrillville police officer Nickolaus Schultz died Sunday morning after being shot responding to a call Friday night.
Schultz, 24, is the department’s first officer killed in the line of duty since the department formed in 1971.
Officer Schultz was shot in the head Friday night. He was responding to a call that an evicted man had returned to his condo. When he arrived, gunfire was exchanged. Merrillville police say the shooter was 33-year-old Micheal Hrnciar.
Hrnciar then shot and killed himself.
Schultz was heralded as a standup officer and a standout football player in his hometown of Lowell, Indiana.
Officer Schultz leaves behind both parents and a sister.
Funeral arrangements are still pending.
