Merrillville police officer has died following Friday night shooting

Merrillville police office Nickolaus Shultz, 24, died Sunday at Christ Hospital on Sunday morning after he was shot in the head Friday night.

Shultz responded to a call of  a man who had been evicted had returned to his home.“Probably round eleven last night I heard two gunshots I was in my bedroom.”The Lake County coroner says that resident was 33-year-old Michael Hrnciar.He was evicted in July and when police showed up they say he was wearing body armor, there was an exchange of gunfire then Hrnciar shot and killed himself.

According to the Merrillville Police Department Officer Shultz succumbed to his wounds at 9:47 a.m.

A task force that includes several police departments the ATF and the FBI are investigating the shooting at the normally quiet complex.

“There is no problems here never had any problems this is the 1st altercation and I’ve been here for 7 years.”

Officer Shultz was only with the department for a year but he has made an impression on his fellow officers.

“I’ve heard nothing but great things about Nick he was just an amazing guy good officer and great friend and very positive person and great person.”
