An early morning fire raced through a two-story home and a three-story apartment building in Oak Park this morning.

The fire was reported about 4:45 a.m. in the 500 block of North Humphrey Avenue; Oak Park Fire Chief Tom Ebsen says the clay tiles on the building's roof allowed the flames to spread rapidly and jump to the 12-flat next door.

At its height, the fire was upgraded to three alarms; the last of the flames were extinguished around 6:25 a.m. The house is a total loss; most of the damage to the apartment building was water damage.
