Ryne Sandberg

On this date in 2005, the Cubs paid tribute to new Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg and retired his number 23 with a flag on the right field foul pole joining Billy Williams’ number 26.

Sandberg was feted by 38,763 fans at Wrigley before that day’s game against the Marlins and took a victory lap around the park after the ceremony where he thanked the fans for always making him feel at home.

For Sandberg, there is great satisfaction in coming home to Wrigley Field and seeing his number flying down the right field line. “The uniform flying on the right field pole just wraps up the memories, events, the games played, all the good things that I enjoyed about going there every single day is wrapped up in that one flag flying up there.”
