A Harvey police officer who was wounded in last week’s hostage situation was honored by the village tonight.

46-year-old Darnell Keel received an Above & Beyond award for taking a bullet during the 21 hour standoff.

Keel said it wasn't the first time he's been shot, but it's the closet a bullet has come to hitting him. The suspect who was holding six children and two adults captive fired at Keel from the front door.

Tonight the village also told the officer Keel is being recommended for a Purple Heart.
