The police chief in downstate Carbondale has been fired and the city says it’s not related to a suspicious death and a lawsuit filed by the victim’s family.

Southern Illinois University student Pravin Varughese of Morton Grove died in February after leaving a party.

His cause of death was listed as hypothermia by the coroner, who said there were no signs of foul play.

But an independent autopsy found signs of head trauma.

Varughese’s family filed a lawsuit against Carbondale and Chief Jody O’ Guinn, claiming the scene was not properly searched and a person who gave the victim a ride from the party was not investigated.

That person is also named in the suit.

Carbondale’s City Manager calls the chief’s firing a confidential matter unrelated to the lawsuit.
