A Humboldt Park Church has partnered with a local comedian to raise awareness about gang violence.

Faith World Church has launched a campaign to get students to watch a 27 minute documentary about what mothers go through when their children are killed due to gang violence.

The video called “For the Love of Mom” was put together by Mike Oquendo and a group of volunteers.  It highlights the moment a mother receives the call letting her know that her son or daughter has been killed. Oquendo says, “Out of personal frustration I decided one day I need to do something, there is something I can do.”

Myrna Roman lost her 23-year-old son back in 2009 when a bullet was lodged in his spine.    Myrna immediately turned to other mothers for support.  She says, “I searched and searched all over the place until I found someone like me.  I think it’s important to be surrounded by people who are just like us and we don’t cry all the time.”  The students plan to take the documentary to their schools hoping that it will make a difference.
