Low clouds along Chicago's lakefront and fog at Gary airport forced an end today to the 54th annual Air and Water Show.

Fog at Gary Airport was a big factor because planes used that airport for take offs and landings.

Safety was the primary consideration in cancelling today's exhibition, and the show aircraft were not equipped for instrument flying, which would have been necessary to fly from Gary’s airport.

Cancellation of the show happened previously in 2011.

The National Weather Service called it a rare condition today, because clouds below one-thousand feet happen only two to three percent of the days in August.
