Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis says she hasn’t decided on running for mayor yet.

Lewis tells the Chicago Tribune that she expects to begin collecting signatures to get on the ballot later this month.

But she will not file paperwork with the state election board for a few more months.

“I think it’s important to see where the numbers are (on the petitions), how many people want to get involved and what the reaction is before taking the step” to possibly register the campaign committee,” Lewis said.

Lewis also said she still needs a campaign staff and to decide if she can raise enough money to face Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Lewis put the chances of entering the mayor’s race at “50-50.”

Chicago Alderman Robert Fioretti is also taking steps toward a possible mayoral run.
