Memorial held for officer killed in Gary

Friends and family of a Gary police officer killed in the line of duty last week gathered Sunday for a memorial service.

Officer Jeff Westerfield was gunned down in his squad car last Sunday.

Today's service was held at the Gary Convention Center to accommodate the large expected crowds that were expected.

Officers from the surrounding areas and residents of Gay also came to pay respects.

Westerfield answered the call for help countless times over his 19 year career.

He leaves behind four children and a fiancée.

The suspect he is being held on an unrelated warrant but no murder charges have been filed.
