Double homicide prompts hospital lockdown

Methodist Hospital in northwest Indiana was locked down early Friday morning after two people were found dead.

Merrillville Police were notified of an assault inside the hospital around 12:30 am, Friday. Upon arrival, police found a woman who had been fatally stabbed.

The woman has been identified as Margarine Haywood, 80, of Gary, Indiana.

As police searched the area, they learned the address of a second possible crime scene outside of the hospital.

They conducted a well-being check at a residence, located on the 1500 block of Hovey Street in Gary, IN and discovered a deceased elderly man.

The man has been identified as 88-year-old James Haywood and his death was ruled a homicide, siting multiple stab wounds as the cause of death, according to Lake County Coroner Merrilee D. Frey.

It was determined that the two victims were husband and wife.

During the investigation, police located the suspect at a residence located on the 3881 Maryland in Gary.

According to Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram, the suspect, who appears to be the son of the victims, was taken into custody and the lockdown at the hospital was lifted at 5:00 am.

The nature of the stabbing is under investigation.

Charges have not yet been filed but are expected, according to officials.

This is the second hospital to go on lockdown in the Chicago area in less than 24 hours.
