2 boys drown near Hobart, Ind.

Police in northwest Indiana are interviewing witnesses and neighbors of two young boys who drowned Saturday night.

Police want to know who owns the swimming hole known as “the pit” on the border of Hobart and Gary and whether it was properly secured.

Authorities say they’ve drained the water and filled the site where 9-year-old Donel Smith and his brother, 8-year-old Terrion, drowned.

A fund at Chase Bank has been set up by a first grade teacher to help the family with funeral expenses.
