Vandals have been lopping off the tops of trees and hacking up bushes along a swath of the South East side.

Trees and bushes have been hacked and chopped in some cases even uprooted. The damage was done on private and public property.

But people living near the Burham Greenway in the East Side neighborhood are taking it personal.

10th Ward Alderman John Pope’s office is just a few blocks away from where the trees were vandalized. Most of it took place on Ave E and along a bike trail between 104th and 109th streets, between midnight and 5 a.m.

The alderman and other people believe the person or people responsible used a lopper or garden shears.

Some of these trees were planted and dedicated to remember a loved one, so the damage is emotional for some. Others say they just enjoy this green space and can’t figure out why someone would want to vandalize it.
