Several residents evacuated their homes and schools were put on lockdown in Evergreen Park Wednesday after a man found a box of dynamite while cleaning out his basement.

Police say, the 93-year-old man’s caretaker was cleaning up after recent flood damage in the 9700 block of Hamline when they came upon the box. The man said he was given the box over 60 years ago.

The Cook County bomb squad was dispatched to the scene as surrounding homes were evacuated.

The bomb squad transported the box, which contained 24 sticks of dynamite police say, to the Thorton Quarry for destruction.

No one was injured.  No charges will be filed.

24 sticks of dynamite stored for 60 years in his basement? – sorry, but this guy is a knucklehead and an endangerment to his neighbors.
