U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel outlined his vision for the future of the nation’s military in a speech in Chicago Tuesday.

The former republican senator and Vietnam veteran told The Chicago Council on Global Affairs the military is at a crossroads, making it necessary to decide how to update the military.

Hagel said programs and platforms that worked well in the past may have to be shelved because they have lost their effectiveness in a highly-evolving technological world.

He gave a troubling list of potential hotspots around the world where military action could be needed at a moment’s notice.

Hagel said the rise of Asia, the explosion of the youth populations in the Middle East and Africa, new technologies bringing people closer together and a resurgence of national and sectarian conflicts around the world all continue to challenge America’s security and prosperity.
