Chicago aldermen voted 36-10 to ban plastic bags in large chain and franchise stores. The new rule will first go into effect in August 2015. Smaller stores will have to get rid of plastic bags a year later.

“I think this plan will push manufacturers to manufacture plastic that is more recyclable, that is more compostable, that is better for the environment and also better for consumers,” said Ald. Geore Cardenas, of the 12th Ward.

Councilman will also decide if large grocery stores should be allowed to sell liquor on Sundays beginning at 8 a.m. instead of 11 a.m.

They will also consider rules for ride-sharing services, pedicab drivers, and food trucks.

First Ward Ald. Joe Moreno believes the food truck industry should be expanded and more accessible.

So now everyone who leaves dog waste behind will have yet another excuse for doing that – and how about the scoopings from cat boxes? All of the plastic bags I get are either used for animal waste or – if they are torn – returned to the store recycling bin. This is Chicago, not San Francisco!

I think they are only banning free plastic shopping bags and I'm pretty sure you all will be able to buy baggies for dog/cat crap. Europe has been doing this forever and it works fine because people bring their own reusable totes.

This is only a money making idea. Get rid of plastic bags to force people to buy cloth/cotton material type bag. Where the city will get a certain proceeds from the new bags. It also forces business to spend more on paper bags, by passing the cost on customer. There are a couple of people that introduce the ban that has business ties wit couple of business here in chicago that sells cloth/cotton type bags . It all about stealing money from the people if they can’t raise the taxes.

Why are bags a problem? Because the animals in this city liter with them. Just as they litter with bottles, cans, diapers and cigarettes. Should we ban bottles cans, etc. When are we going to make people responsible. I live in a nice neighborhood without plastic bags littered about. Why do I have to suffer because of the few who don;t care about their environment.

The chemtrails must be working ,,,,they are controlling people with insanity like plastic bags. They will take away your breath if they can with their lies. Who needs Aldermen? Who needs a Mayor?
They are just here to punish you for being born "for the Children".

Really people? Some of the dumbest comments I have ever seen. Buy a cloth reusable bag. Use a box or container to put your groceries or purchases in. I think you guys need to educate yourselves on just how bad these plastic bags are on our environment!
