Stickin’ it to Stress
Acupuncture has proved it’s here to stay, dating as far back as the first century BCE. But for those used to the immediate relief that comes in the form of a pill or prescription, it can be difficult to wrap our heads around this ancient practice.
According to David Kato of Lincoln Square Acupuncture, acupuncture can help with the physical symptoms of stress including sleep issues and muscle pain. Acupuncturists accomplish this by inserting hair-thin needles (yes, they really are that small) into the certain energy points in the body. In Chinese medicine, each organ has it’s associated emotion. By inserting needles into various energy points in the body, acupuncturists are able to re-route energy and get it moving, relieving a slew of problems in the process.
“Stress affects the liver and one of the liver’s main functions is to maintain smooth flow of energy,” Kato says. “What the acupuncture points do is they help to restore the liver’s function of moving the energy.”
He says acupuncture can help:
- Restore internal balance
- Get the body into a parasympathetic state of rest and relaxation. It allows the body to escape the constant fight or flight response triggered by various stressors
- Alleviate pain and reduce inflammation
Above all, acupuncture allows the body to recover from the stress of every day life.
“Your body is designed to adapt to stressors,” Kato says. “If you’re under continuous stress without the ability for the body to repair itself and reset itself, you’re going to run into all the stress-related problems down the road. Acupuncture … allows time to reset.”
