How To: Keep Allergies in Check

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America estimates that one in five Americans suffer from some type of allergy. Watery eyes, scratchy throats and runny noises plague many people at the turn of the seasons and for an unfortunate group, year round. However, there are steps you can take to decrease your exposure and relieve symptoms. Doctor Dominic Patawaran of the Raby Institute for Integrative Medicine has these tips:

Environmental Changes:

  • If you have central air conditioning, find high filtration screens and clean your filters frequently. As hard as it may be, try to keep your windows shut to decrease the amount of allergens that enter your home.
  • Keep your shoes at the door so you don’t track allergens from the street throughout your home.
  • Consider getting a HEPA filter. These filter out the air and decrease allergens in your environment to help minimize your symptoms.
  • Cover your pillow cases and mattresses. This will keep dust mites under control and prevent them from triggering your allergies.


  • Intranasal sprays help decrease inflammation in your nose.
  • Over-the-counter antihistamines help control your allergy response.
  • Steroids may help if your symptoms become severe.

Natural Remedies:

  • Use a neti pot or saline nasal spray to rinse out your sinuses.
  • Take stinging nettles. Doctor Patawaran recommends one to two 200 mg pills every two to four hours to help control your allergy response.
  • NAC is an amino acid that helps break down mucus in a more natural way than some over-the-counter options. “It also provides extra support for glutathione,” Doctor Patawaran says. “Glutathione is a great antioxidant for the system so it has a lot of broad-based health benefits as well.”

If you continue to struggle with controlling your allergies, Doctor Patawaran recommends seeing your physician or an allergist for testing.
