Just steps from the altar, illness struck a Chicago man while vacationing in Mexico. His plans took a backseat as he now preps for a lengthy and extensive surgery scheduled for tomorrow. One last wish: to marry the woman he loves before he goes under.

54-year-old Lewis Stepp will be a surgical patient tomorrow, but today, he was a groom determined to marry 49-year-old Monica Kaufman, his girlfriend of 3 years. He wants to do it before doctors treat a blocked artery in his leg – a 7 hour vascular surgery in the morning.

About 20 friends and family gathered at Northwestern Hospital, some via Skype, for the exchanging of the vows.

Lewis enlisted the help of the hospital social worker, who was happy to play the role of wedding planner with only four days to plan a church wedding in the hospital.
Lewis sStepp will now not take another step without his bride, now his wife, by his side.
