Friends and family of the former Rogers Park couple who were victims of a crash at a popular music festival in Austin, TX are joining together to offer financial assistance.

Evan and Jamie West were sitting on their motorcycle amongst a crowd of people at the SXSW festival on March 13th when an alleged drunk driver plowed into the group.

27 year-old Jamie West was among the three people killed. 28 year-old Evan West suffered head trauma, a broken leg and ribs, and internal injuries. More than 20 others were also injured.

The two used to work at the Heartland Cafe in Rogers Park, where people are stunned over what happened.

“They were very close with some of the employees that are still here, and it’s been a challenging time. Certainly not as challenging as it is for Evan’s family,” said Tom Rosenfeld of the Heartland Cafe.

The two were married for nearly two years.

There’s a website where people can donate money to help defray Evan’s medical costs. As of Friday afternoon, the amount raised was more than $20,000.
