A container garden is a great way to get kids introduced to gardening. It’s relatively small and literally contained, and they can get creative.

Kids learn important lessons about plant cycles and growth.

Start with a container of your choice, then carefully add potting mix. Use a combination of plants for visual effects: the “thriller, filler and spiller.” A “thriller” is a centerpiece plant that lives up to its big name. A “filler” is a flowering plant or leafy plant that complements the thriller plant. A “spiller” is a plant that drapes or spills off the side of the pot.

Work with your child to tend to the plant and learn about watering and light.
